About

Literary Providence is a printed map of writers and writing in Providence, Rhode Island, which is available now at locations across the city or through this website.

Literary Providence describes 37 sites across the city that are connected to novelists, poets, essayists, journalists, and other writerly types who have called Providence home. From the horror-writers H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe, pioneering feminists such as Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and to contemporary novelists like Cormac McCarthy, it tells the story of Providence's literary history.

Literary Providence is a project of Hidden Streets, which creates beautifully designed, printed maps and guides to Rhode Island and the region made with local knowledge and love. The Rhode Island Council for the Humanities provided major grant funding for the project.

We hope that you enjoy the map and at the very least discover some new writers and visit some new places in Providence.
